What is BMI?

BMI, which is calculated using the Quetelet Index, is defined as a person's body weight divided by the square of his or her height. In other words, BMI is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of his or her height in meters (kg/m2). It is used as an indicator of body fatness for adults. In children and adolescents, it is used to monitor growth.

BMI Categories

The categories of BMI are listed below for both adults and children and adolescents.

  1. Normal weight (BMI ≥ 18.5)
    If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, you are normal weight and do not need to lose weight.
  2. Underweight (BMI < 18.5)
    If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are underweight and may need to gain weight in order to reduce your risk of weight-related diseases, such as anorexia nervosa, osteoporosis, and increased mortality.
  3. Overweight (BMI ≥ 25)
    If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, you may have weight concerns. You may need to lose weight in order to reduce your risk of obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
  4. Obesity (BMI ≥ 30)
    According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a person is obese when his or her BMI is higher than 30. A BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese.
    If you have a BMI of 30 or more, you should aim to lose weight in order to reduce your risk of obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

How to Calculate BMI?

BMI is calculated using the Quetelet Index. The formula for BMI is weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of height (in meters)

BMI Categories for Children and Adolescents

Overweight (BMI ≥ 85th percentile)

If your child's BMI is greater than or equal to the 85th percentile for children of the same sex and age, he or she may be overweight.

Overweight (BMI ≥ 85th percentile)

If your child's BMI is greater than or equal to the 85th percentile for children of the same sex and age, he or she may be overweight.

At-Risk of Overweight (BMI ≥ 5th percentile and < 85th percentile)

If your child's BMI is greater than or equal to the 5th percentile and less than the 85th percentile for children of the same sex and age, he or she may be at risk of overweight.
